3rd Annual ‘KAYAK FOR KIDS” Fundraising Event

The 2018 Kayak for Kids (K4K) fundraising events were a tremendous success!

  • Record number of participants

  • Record number of donations received

  • 10 corporate sponsors

The “Round de Island K4K” event took place over two days on September 29th and 30th.  The first leg consisted of 16 kayakers and 6 paddle boarders that departed Somerset Long Bay beach shortly after sunrise; taking a clockwise direction along North Shore.

Day one was very challenging for two-thirds of the way along North Shore with choppy seas, moderate to heavy winds and rain squalls.

The conditions tested the physical endurance of all of the participants, particularly the paddle boarders as well as the constant attentiveness and support the safety vessels; including the Royal Bermuda Regiment, to whom we are enormously grateful for their support.

The conditions improved a little along the stretch from Fort St Catherine’s to St Davids at which point the chop & wind again proved challenging for the final push of Day One. It was great to see everyone reunited at the end of the day at Clearwater Beach.

Day two started with friendly Southwesterly waves with Northeasterly winds which propelled the paddlers quickly down South Shore.  Unfortunately, once they turned towards the north around Whale Bay and Pompano Beach Resort, things got interesting and more challenging. Heavy winds, now directly out of the North, and rough seas met the paddlers head on making the last couple of miles  or so very difficult.  Speeds declined from 4 mph to 0.5 mph for some of the participants.

Again, it was great to see everyone eventually finish safely back at Somerset Long Bay beach where a well-deserved Bar-B-Q was enjoyed by the participants and their friends and families - all courtesy of our generous sponsors.

The “West End K4K” had to be cancelled on the afternoon of September 30th due to the extremely poor weather conditions, however, we managed to arrange an alternative outing on the morning of October 6th with 14 participants taking part.

The weather conditions could not have been better.  The kayakers left Somerset Long Bay beach at 9:00AM and paddled through Mangrove Bay, under Watford Bridge, through Grey’s Bridge or, for the more adventurous kayakers, around Dockyard and Snorkel Park; returning to Somerset Long Bay beach.
